GAX5 provides connections for most Garmin
and Magellan GPS with the appropriate GPS cables.
It allows the use of mapping
software needing NMEA input.
However, it is not possible to transfer data (waypoints,
tracks, routes etc) between AXIM and GPS.
e.g. You cannot use OziExplorer
to download/upload waypoints/tracks to/from a Garmin/Magellan GPS.
Tricks
and tips:
Important procedure:
Start you GPS software before connecting to a GPS especially if you are using
it for the first time.
GPS constantly send data through the data cable. As soon as a GPS is connected to the serial port of AXIM, AXIM detects data and opens the com port and start looking for application, depending on the configuration, usually Activsync or other devices like infra red. Because the interface cannot be used for active sync, AXIM will try and try without success resulting it seems to "hang"
The trick is to start your GPS software first, so that it occupies
(and looks for data from) com 1. Then connects the GPS.
Com 1 is then configured
to accept GPS data (so it seems) until the next reset. Which means that it is
not necessary to start GPS software first and then connect GPS. You can close
the GPS software, may be start a different one, or switch off AXIM, and do anything
else and then come back to use the GPS again, whether the GPS stays connected
or not, that is, until the next reset.
Therefore
this is what you should do:
1. Start GPS software
(configured to use com 1) and then connect GPS.
or
2. GPS can be connected, but switched off (so no
data), start GPS software, then switch on GPS.
If you have to do a software reset, disconnect the GPS, otherwise the above will happen. GPS interface (GAX5) can stay connected as there is no data going into the com port.
This seems to be a peculiar behavior of AXIM (tries to start device when data is detected). There may be some settings or registry hack that can overcome this. Let us know if you find a solution. Still it is not a problem having to start with the procedure.
Note also there is no provision in the AXIM design to include locking mechanism in the bottom connector. It is held by friction only. So be careful not to put excessive strain on the cable and to avoid accidental disconnection. Though disconnecting and connecting the cable again does not affect operation much in GPS use.
FAQ:
What
software can be used? especially as far as the "trick" is concerned?
All mapping software with NMEA input should be compatible. Because
different software has different characteristics and configuration requirements
we cannot say which software may be incompatible as we do not have access of most
software to test.
We have tested with Tom Tom Navigator
and OziExplorer which are 100% compatible.

you have questions related to our GPS products (cables) please write to: gpsinfo@pc-mobile.net
Please see our
GPSFAQ for possible answers before asking.
We do not (can
not) answer specific PDA/GPS/Software question like (what
software/GPS can I use with AXIM?), so
please do not ask such questions. You can find the answers by following the links
in our GPSFAQ. You need to spend at least many hours
to find out (especially if you are new to GPS) so you cannot expect us to tell
you the answer in an email.
