Which
GPS and cable work with PSP(1000) and MapThis
? (These cables
are not available for PSP-2000) In
theory, any GPS capable of NMEA output should work with appropriate cable. However,
PSP's serial port is non-standard and requires level converter so that it can
accept RS232 data which most GPS output. RS232 level converter is built into GPSP
interface cable and can be used with GPS in the table below connecting with appropriate
GPS cable.
Here is a list of what models that
can or cannot be used. Information are taken from manuals of individual models
from the manufacturer's web sites. We include only handheld models which is practical
for use with the PSP. Larger and automotive models are not included for this reason.
If your GPS is not listed it can still be used if your GPS manufacturer can provide
an RS232 cable to connect to G9PSP. Another however,
not all GPS output the same RS232 level. Though a true RS232 device (such as a
PC/PDA) has wide tolerance of level acceptance so all GPS should work, PSP may
not have such tolerance especially after level conversion. NMEA output is also
slightly different from different GPS so may not be compatible with MapThis.
We only have a few GPS to test (YES in tested?
column) but it gives a good indication of compatible models. One
important thing you must do to use any GPS below is to configure MapThis
in config.txt
to baud=4800.

hardware or software incompatibility. Therefore they are regarded as incompatible
at this stage. YES - these models have
been tested and working. All other models listed
that have not been tested (and without doubtful

the event that you find that it is not compatible we can accept return for refund.
How to set up your GPS : All
Garmin GPS - Menu > Setup
> Interface > NMEA
(or NMEA OUT on some GPS) Baud should be 4800 by default on all Garmins and not
changeable.
Magellan Meridian / Sportrak - Menu > Setup
> NMEA > V2.1
GSA Menu > Setup
> Baud Rate > 4800
Important: Always
connect the GPS before
starting MapThis.
If your GPS is getting position lock and MapThis
does not seem to show the position in GPS mode, exitMapThis
and start it again.
