FAQ:
What
do I need to connect e740 with my GPS? If
you have the PC serial cable of your GPS, then you need PTU2S,
which connects with your GPS serial cable. If you do not have the serial cable,
then in addition to PTU2S, you
also need GE9SF
(for Garmin E series), or GR9SF
(for Garmin round plug GPS), or GM9SF
(for Magellan M3xx, SporTrak, Meridian). We do not have serial cables for GPS
other than these.
Is
driver needed for PTU2S
? Is it complicated / difficult to install? It
is very easy to install and use. You are supplied with a single driver file, PCMPTU2S.CAB,
copy this file into My Document folder of e740, tap on it then the driver is installed
and the file PCMPTU2S.CAB is deleted automatically (Do
a SOFT RESET after
this, which is not mentioned in the supplied document).
You should now have a serial port in your e740 (with PTU2S connected, that is),
occupying Com 1. So you can configure your software to use com 1, which is the
default of most software. You may see that you still have a Hayes Compatible Modem
in com 1 (it is there before the driver was installed), this is normal and there
should be no conflicts.
Do
you make a combined serial cable for e740? That
was our original plan. But the cost would still be the same, if not more, as the
combination of PTU1 and USB2S. PTU1+USB2Sis
still compact and short combined. You can use PTU1 to connect other USB devices,
and you can use USB2S for PC. Therefore
it is best to make/sell these separately.
What
do I need if I want to connect eTrex GPS and be able to power e740 in car? PTU2S
+ GE9SF + CKUC (substitute GE9SF
with GR9SF for Garmin R, or GM9SF for Magellan etc) It
sounds a lot of cables (there are 6 parts all together) but they are quite neat
in use. Also you can use only the parts you need in some occasions without having
to take/connect everything. If you already have a car power cable for e740, you
can use that so CKUC
is not needed.
Does
PTU2S work with
all mobile phone cables? It
works with our own data cable (S25D for Siemens), without
the need of any additional driver. We
cannot guarantee that it will work with other phone cables as every cable is designed
differently. Please
do not ask us whether it will work with a certain phone as we cannot tell you
because we do not have one to test, particularly if you are from USA (the only
phone from USA we know will work is Siemens S46 with our own S25D
or the original Siemens data cable). Moreover, different phone isconfigured differently
and the networks used can also affect the way the phone/PDA is configured.
In
theory, ones that has built in Hayes compatible modem (without the need of driver)
should work . Ones that need drivers are unlikely to work.
Can
I use PTU2S to
do serial hotsync? We
do not think so. The
hardware makes it possible. But the firmware (Toshiba rom) does not make it possible
in that the only choice for active sync is USB. There is no provision to use serial
port. If Toshiba or someone can come up with software/driver/registry hack, then
it may be possible.
Can
I have a longer USB Sync cable? Almost
all our customers prefer a shorter/lighter cable to carry around. As most are
using laptop or desktop with front USB connection or hub, a shorter cable is usually
preferred. If you do need a longer cable to connect to the back of your desktop,
you can buy an USB extension cable (male to female) with various lengths which
is easily available from most computer shops for no more than a few dollars. (also
applies to USB2S)
Do
you have any cable that can be used with e570/e550/Audiovox/Thera? No,
we do not make any cable for these models.
Do
you have any cable that can connect e310
to a GPS? No,
e310 does not
have a serial port or USB host capability so there is not way to connect any GPS
to e310 via cable.
We would suggest you change your PPC if you want to use GPS.
